The following is a press release announcing this program: Douglas County Public Works is now making recycling bins available for groups and individuals to use to collect beverage containers at their local public or private events. Provided at no cost are recycling bins, labeled bins to sort the collected containers, plastic bags, and helpful hints for making the recycling effort successful. The event organizers are responsible for reserving the bins, pick-up and drop off, and recruiting volunteers to manage the recycling activities at their event. In 1997, the Music on the Half Shell concert series became the first to offer event recycling. In following years, the Melon Festival, Celtic Games, River Appreciation Festival, Umpqua Valley Art Festival, the County Fair, the Roseburg Swim Meet, and others have joined in the effort. After using the bins at their 2004 Swim Meet at UCC, the Roseburg Swim team was proud to see other swim meets around the Northwest follow their example and begin recycling. Having recycling at events is a great way to reduce the amount of recyclable material going to the landfill, collect deposit containers that would otherwise be thrown away, and demonstrate a commitment to a clean and waste-wise event. In many cases, trash disposal has been reduced by half. To reserve the bins for an event or for more information, call the Douglas County waste reduction manager at 440-4350. # # # # # By having recycling at your special event you can reduce the cost of refuse removal, reduce waste, and prevent litter.
